Roscommon Metropolitan Recreation Authority (RMRA)

The Roscommon Metropolitan Recreation Authority (RMRA) is located in Roscommon County, Michigan. RMRA is the governing authority for several entities and events available to the community of Roscommon. We monitor and govern the operations of the C.R.A.F. Center, AuSable River Center, and MetroPark.

RMRA is dedicated to providing quality recreation programs for residents and visitors of all ages. Working in conjunction with other groups the Authority has community activities and programs planned year around. The RMRA itself maintains Tisdale Triangle, Metro Park, and is responsible for overall function of the CRAF Center.

Roscommon Metropolitan Recreation Authority meets at the CRAF Center on the third Wednesday of January, March, May, September and November at 7:00 p.m. The public is always welcome.

The Marguerite Gahagan Nature Preserve is a sixty acre natural area which includes an interpretive cabin, a handicapped accessible interpretive trail, a towering growth of pine forest, headwaters for Tank Creek, a pond, and a well mark trail. This site is well utilized by visitors and school classes as it serves to educate everyone about the value of conservation. It provides a quiet area close to down town and schools for reflection and nature study. There is a naturalist on staff and programs conducted spring, summer and fall.

The preserve is open to the public for hiking, snow-shoeing, birding and many other uses. There are several foot trails that meander through the upland forest, totaling a network roughly 3 miles of well-marked pathways.

The baseball fields are one of the best within District 8 Little League play and are the pride of Little League and the Metro Park.

The Roscommon-St. Helen Little League maintain the fields. They have built dugouts on each field, added batting cages, bull pens, and completed fencing around the T-ball field. Every spring their volunteers put in 100 man hours in clean up and ground maintenance.

RMRA included improvements to Metro Park in their goals and the improvements were completed in 2015.

The C.R.A.F. Center was an old middle school building that has been renovated into a Community Recreation, Activity and Fitness Center. It has become the center of activity for several Chamber of Commerce events (Festivals) and the Summer Concerts Series. The building contains two gymnasiums for basketball and volleyball, two fitness rooms, and an aerobics room. There are a wide variety of fitness classes available, as well as dance, clogging, karate, and tai chi. Recently, we have added pickleball, inside batting cages, and golf as new activities.

Various sized rooms are available for private and public rental for classes, meetings or long term lease.

You may find the most current activities on Facebook or call for current schedule.

The entire downtown area is closed to traffic and the streets are lined with luminaries. Shops are open and offer hot cocoa, hot cider, and other refreshments.
